Chapter 10

Xavier “Wilder”

If you can put ya’ best foot forward, why not?

Ididn’t stay at the hospital long. Ant wasn’t alert, and the shit pissed me off. How he took a turn for the worse was beyond me. Before I brought him in there, he was fine, and now he wouldn’t even open his eyes. Shit wasn’t sitting right with me, but I didn’t want to leave Yara in the car too long.

I stepped outside and ran my hand down my face in frustration when I noticed Yara wiping her eyes. Part of me wanted to impose, but the girl was triggered. Something had happened to her, and if she let me in, I would figure it out and kill the muthafuckas who did it.

“Hey.” She held her head down. “You need a minute?”

“I’m good. Everything happens for a reason, right? Anyway, is everything aight with you? You look stressed.”

“Oh, yeah, I’m aight. My mans ain’t doing too good, but he's gonna pull through.”

“Oh, okay. Well, where to next?” She got comfortable inside the car. Her eyes were puffy and red, but she smirked to play it off.

“The crib. You need some rest, and I got work to handle.”

“So, you taking me to your crib, and you sure your wife is okay with that?”

“I’m not taking you to my crib with my wife. I got an extra apartment. You can stay there.” She squinted in my direction. “Look, before you turn it down, it’s safe, and the refrigerator is fully stocked. I won’t bother you.”

“So, what you want? Pussy? Should I prostitute or something?”

“What? Fuck no. That shit is sick.” Yara had caught me off guard with her line of questions. Now I knew she had been through some shit, but I didn’t expect anything like that. “You’re good. But what I will say is that you must keep it clean.”

“Can I ask you something?”

“Shoot.”

“Why were you at that party? What kind of work do you do?”

I wasn’t about to tell her about my street dealings, so I opted for the clean version. “I work in a corporation with my family. We own software and turned it into a family-run business.”

“Oh, nice. That’s impressive.”

I didn’t know if she was gassing me or not, but hearing her interest in me made a nigga feel good.

“What do you want to do in life?”

“Live.” Yara didn’t even take a minute to think before she answered. The faraway look in her eyes had me curious.

“Besides that. What else?”

“Wilder. Can I call you that?” I nodded. “In life, I was never given a chance. All I know is how to survive, and for once, I want to live and not just exist.”

“That’s some deep shit.”

“Yeah, and just like you are a corporate guy, I can smell a thug when I see one, so spill. Wassup?”

“You’re hilarious, but baby girl, I don’t get down like that anymore.”

“If you say so. With a name like Wilder, I know your ass used to give ya’ parents a run for their money, huh?” She looked me in my face, batting her long lashes.
